Gradi, day 68 of Spring, 557
The portals
were once again sitting in Camp Dred as we began to arrive at the appointed
hour, so we gathered at Camp Dred. The group was fairly small, and only Rincewind
was present as a teleporter. That meant that the entry ino PC6 would be rough,
with no initial runner group to clear the area for us. Always dicey.
We set out in high spirits, and quickly were clearing the first Pitch cave. We moved on steadily and reached PC5 without much incident.
Things looked to be going quite well, when disaster struck.
During the crucial teleport, Rincewind's Strange Stone broke. Before it did, quite a number of us were sent to PC6. However, 2 of the anchors and all their subgroup members failed to teleport, and of course those were the 2 largest groups. In all 10 exiles were left stranded in PC5.
The rest of us had our hands full in PC6. It was clear something had gone wrong during the teleport since not everyone glowed as usual. But in the heat of trying to establish a position of strength in the Landing Zone, we could not stop to wonder.
With no initial runner group and so few exiles, it was a massacre as the Noids in the Landing Zone trounced us. Although we fought valiantly, and I and others did manage to run several Noids away, there were too few fighters remaining to prevail over the Noids. We fell quickly and resoundingly.
There's just not much you can do when luck is against you like that.
